Aberdeen City Council purchased and demolished the former British Home Stores site and Indoor Market for redevelopment as part of the recovery plan for the city centre.
Construction is now well under way by main contractor Morrison Construction to create a destination market-style venue featuring international style food and drink outlets. The commercial marketplace elements will promote local produce and goods alongside continental style delicatessen, cafes and food outlets.
The McGinty’s Group, who are behind some of Aberdeen’s most loved venues, were appointed as preferred operator of the new Market in August 2023 and have named the new building Flint as a tribute to the site’s historic link to the craft of flintknapping 8,000-years ago.
Flint also reflects the spirit of ingenuity and resilience that is a hallmark of the Granite City.
The new Market is a critical site in the heart of the city centre and will fulfil several objectives including the creation of an ‘active’ frontage to Union Street, linking with active travel and pedestrian priorities for the city centre and increasing footfall.
It will also enliven Hadden Street and Market Street with urban realm improvements in and around The Green. This will improve pedestrian connectivity between Union Street and the bus and railway stations. Flint is due to open in 2027.
