Essential night works to help complete Union Street Central streetscape
30 October 2026
Essential overnight works will begin on Union Street Central on Monday 2 November until Friday 13 November as part of the completion of the streetscape project in time for the Christmas Parade on Sunday 15 November.
These works will be undertaken from 7pm to 7am and may not happen every night as contingency has allowed for any possible weather disruption or unforeseen circumstances. These works have been programmed to minimise any disruption to city centre businesses, pedestrians and daytime activities.
The activities will include:
- Final tie-in works and footway improvements.
- Snagging, grouting and finishing works.
- Installation of catenary wires and decorative lighting.
- Installation of new lighting totem poles.
- Replacement of damaged paving tiles at selected business thresholds.
- Sealing works between the new footway and adjacent building frontages.
Noisey operations such as kerb breakout works will always be completed by 11pm to minimise disruption.
Temporary footway restrictions will be required during the installation of the catenary lighting system adjacent to the former BHS building and Peterkins.
Between 2 and 5 November, pedestrians will continue to be able to access Union Street via either the north or south footway.
On Friday 6 November, due to the safety-critical nature of the catenary wire installation, a temporary full footway closure will be required between Correction Wynd and Market Street during the overnight working period. Signed pedestrian diversions will be in place and the Correction Wynd stairs will remain open throughout.
Should the works be completed ahead of programme, the overnight activities may finish before Friday 13 November.
